Improv troupe Groundlings join the web TV fray Tuesday with the debut of a new online series.
The Los Angeles-based comedy collective, which boasts alumni like Saturday Night Live‘s Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell, inked a deal in April to deliver 50 web shorts through Sony Pictures Television’s digital media hub, Crackle.
"Tapped" (embedded), the inaugural episode of the self-titled series, imagines a casual phone conversation interrupted by overzealous Homeland Security officials.
The gag is funny, though not that fresh, but the banter between the two smooth-talking government agents is a shining bright spot in the sketch.
"Tapped" might not be quite as genius as the Groundlings’ YouTube hit "The Street Magic of David Blaine," which first got the group noticed by Sony, but its a strong start nonetheless. And with 49 more three-to-five-minute skits in the pipeline, the best is likely yet to come.
