Never mind that the Google-Yahoo search revenue sharing partnership is limited to advertising on Yahoo's U.S. and Canadian websites -- Europeans regulators are weighing in on the matter.

The European Union’s antitrust body is investigating the partnership. This is in addition to the Justice Department’s ongoing probe into the matter and previously-reported objections to the deal from U.S. advertisers and an international newspaper trade group.

Reuters spoke with Jonathan Todd, a spokesman for European Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes, who said:

"In mid-July, we decided to open a preliminary investigation on our own initiative into potential effects of the Google-Yahoo agreement on competition in the European Economic Area (EEA) market."

Yahoo and Google are cooperating with the European investigation. Companies found to breach the EU's competition rules can face fines of up to 10 percent of their global revenues.
