SAN DIEGO, CA -- A new web site launched Monday is giving people all over the world a chance to be a designer, regardless of their experience.
Unveiled at the DEMOfall 2008 convention, CrowdSpring is essentially a free-for-all for wannabe or seasoned designers to submit work in response to a query. For example, if Wired posted a request asking for someone to design its January 2009 magazine cover, then anybody in the world could submit their entry. Wired would then choose whichever magazine cover it liked the most -- and then pay that designer for his or her work.
CrowdSpring offers an alternative business model for design work.
Traditionally, the design industry is extremely competitive: You'd have to be pretty lucky to even get your foot in the door, and you'd build up your career from there. CrowdSpring's developers believe its open model will promote broader innovation while providing opportunities to undiscovered, talented designers.
