A handful of studios and online retailers are rumored to be gearing up to launch a movie platform that could compete with the Apple-owned iTunes platform, according to TechCrunch.

The initiative, called Open Market, is supposedly backed by Sony, Amazon, Fox, Paramount, Universal and Time Warner -- but would notably exclude Disney-owned studios like Pixar or Miramax, which are very much on Team iTunes, according to TechCrunch editor Michael Arrington.

It sounds great in theory -- and we'd be thrilled if there were more competition in the market -- but color us skeptical that these enormous companies could get it together and reach an agreement on how to run the thing.
