Marc Andreessen, co-founder of Netscape and the social networking site Ning, and Hewlett-Packard's Ben Horowitz have both made a "significant investment" in the mobile live streaming video startup, Qik, the L.A. Times reports.

The service is unique in that it requires only a cell phone and broadcasts the feed instantaneously online. There’s no need to lug around a camera and laptop. And perhaps what’s most attractive is Qik’s compatibility with other sites, including its text-only equivalent Twitter.

While Qik is one of the more recognizable brand in at the moment, it still faces competition from sites like Kyte.

Andreessen's investment could help put the service on the map, as mobile streaming becomes more mainstream. The startup entrepreneur also joined Facebook’s board of director’s this past June.
