Google, long held up as the most awesomely awesome place to work, was rumored to be eliminating one of the sweetest perks of being a Googler -- free dinner.

"Workers at the Googleplex will remain amply fed, with free breakfast and lunch -- dinner will be reserved for geeks only -- but it's still a shocking cutback," reported Valleywag's Owen Thomas earlier today.

Thomas later clarified that the company wasn't cutting dinner for everyone -- just in buildings inhabited by non-tech employees.

But Googlers dispute the claims. The company is still very much serving free dinner, according to one source. And while Google declined to comment on specifics -- saying only that it is dedicated to providing "a great working environment" for Googlers -- one commenter on Valleywag says the rumor may have started with the cancellation of dinner at one of the cafes.

"Apparently dinner was canceled at one build on the Mountain View campus for reasons unknown, perhaps for cost-cutting, who knows, but not across all buildings and certainly not Google-wide," said Valleywag commenter "syntheticzero".
