Leila Moss and her dark pop crew continue their inexorable rise, which is what you’d expect from a band that mashes Nico, Spector and more into a postmodern jumble with crossover success. So what’s next? How about simultaneous props and promotion from Microsoft and Mac?
It may parse normal to some journos and fans that The Duke Spirit is landing attention from Redmond and Cupertino in the same month, but it nevertheless skews strange and fun to Listening Post. The band is playing SoHo’s Apple store on Thursday at 6PM in a string of special New York dates designed to "coincide," as their press release states, with being named Windows Media’s Artist on the Rise for August. Still smarting from the Mac vs. Microsoft brouhaha sparked by our interview with Herbaliser, I thought it worth mentioning.
Make of it what you will, or won’t. While you’re at it, check out the band’s video for "Lasso," in which Moss is haunted by ghosts of her bandmates. If you’re looking for a creepier, superior version of theconcept, check out Metric’s unforgettable video for "Monster Hospital." It shreds, and scares, righteously.
I would have embedded it for a better compare-and-contrast, but Universal Music Group is just lame that way. WTF, Universal? It’s the 21st century. Catch up already.
