Despite its cloud-computing ambitions Amazon still loves the book business: they have bought Shelfari.com, the social network for book lovers announced in its blog last night
Amazon made an investment in Shelfari back in February of 2007, and, three weeks ago, they also acquired the rare, hard-to-find book retailer, AbeBooks.com, based out of Canada and Germany.
Fun fact: AbeBooks owns a major stake in LibraryThing, which is one of Shefari’s major competitors.
So it seems that Amazon is suddenly very interested in getting a foothold in this niche market populated with techie bibliophiles.
"Shelfari and Amazon will work hand in hand to continue to grow our dynamic community and create innovative new tools around the books you love," Shelfari founder Josh Hug states in their blog.
New tools? Like, for instance, a handy, second-generation ebook reader?
