“Single-copy magazine sales in the six months ended June 30 fell to 44.1 million copies from 47.1 million a year ago."

It seems that there was no specific genre unaffected affected by the drop in sales, but two pop culture favorites did see favorable returns.

“Most top titles, including best-selling Cosmopolitan and O, The Oprah Magazine, had sharp declines. Of the top 10 sellers, only People, the entertainment news magazine, and In Style posted gains."

What is the cause of the widespread newsstand slump? As our sister publication portfolio.com says, high gas prices are an obvious likely culprit -- putting both a strain on the consumer’s extraneous spending habits as well as the cost of wholesale shipping -- and it could also simply be that more and more people are forgoing the luxury of glossy print for online.

Subscription sales bumped up the numbers in overall circulation, but it looks like they’ll need a few more scandals, controversial covers or the highly coveted celebrity baby photos to make up for losses in the second half.
