OK, first things first: Darker My Love vocalist Tim Presley’s beard is hilarious. It fits his band like a flute, which is to say not at all. Secondly, you have to stare at it a lot in the spaced-out video for "Two Ways Out," at right, which echoes bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain or The Stone Roses more than it does Iron and Wine or ZZ Top.
Someone get that dude a shaver.
But aside from that hairy marginalia, Darker My Love‘s actual music features some quality throwback rock. More can be had once the band’s awkwardly named forthcoming effort 2 drops on August 5. Same goes for its current tour, which hits San Francisco on Friday, Los Angeles on Saturday, and parts outward throughout the next couple of months in support of kindred space-rockers The Dandy Warhols.
Meanwhile, if you’re looking for a cool visual precedent for Darker My Love’s "Two Ways Out" video, check out the video for the Pixies’ cover of The Jesus and Mary Chain’s "Head On." It is actually one of the only watchable videos the band ever made, which sucked because it came out right as the legend was about to break up. That was a dark time, my friends. Darker than Darker My Love, in fact.
But compare and contrast the two videos at your leisure, and suggest similar clips that you may have found. There will be no test afterwards.
