Some people spend their retirement playing golf. Others visit their grandkids. Former congressman Curt Weldon has been busy setting up arms deals along the 'axis of evil.'
But Weldon's new gig should not come as a surprise. During his time in Congress, Weldon was famous for his dealings with questionable regimes, which is reflected now in his curriculum vitae, a copy of which was obtained by *DANGER ROOM *(this is not really much to brag about, since I'm told he frequently distributed this). The document features pictures of Weldon's travels while in office from North Korea to Libya, and shows him giving baseball caps to Moammar Qadaffi and bragging of his time spent with North Korea's leadership.
While photos of Weldon glad handing Azerbaijan's leader are fun, my favorite snapshot is the one above, showing Weldon popping out of Saddam Hussein's infamous "spider hole" in Iraq. This picture could eventually end up being prescient, based on Ken Silverstein's latest reporting at* Harper's*, which indicates that charges have been filed against another Weldon associate.
Update:
TPMMuckraker reports that Weldon's associate, Cecilia Grimes, ditched her Blackberry at a fastfood resaturant to avoid handing it over to the FBI. "She also tossed the grand-jury subpoenas, Amtrak receipts, American airline boarding passes, and fourteen RSVP cards for a dinner honoring Weldon, which call for responses to be sent to Grimes."
