The comedians behind LOLcat laughathon I Can Has Cheezburger? have launched a new site, Totally Looks Like, that dares readers to juxtapose celebrity faces with the stars' unlikely doppelgängers.
"The concept's been done in magazines for a long time," said Cheezburger, aka Ben Huh, CEO of I Can Has Cheezburger?, in a phone conversation Wednesday. "We decided to test that idea in a user-generated format."
A day after the launch, popular submissions include: toothy shots of Gary Busey and a horse (pictured); a bald, post-meltdown Britney Spears compared to icy Gotham villain Mr. Freeze; actor Nick Nolte's 2008 mug shot alongside an illustration of fantasy beast Cthulhu; and rapper Flava Flav, who bears a striking resemblance to Stripe, the leader of the evil creatures that ran amok in Gremlins.
Totally Looks Like is off to a good start. Huh said the celebrity-riffing site has seen his crew's best launch ever -- including I Can Has Cheezburger? -- receiving more than 60 submissions since going live late Tuesday. By comparison, their previous venture, pop-culture chart site GraphJam, tallied about a dozen submissions on its inaugural day in late March.
For now, eagle-eyed tabloid watchers submit photos of celebs and their comical counterparts to site administrators, but Huh says the LOLcat engineers are building a tool to let users craft their own side-by-side creations.
Huh promised that TotallyLooksLike, the sixth comedy site from the I Can Has Cheezburger? crew since the LOLcat site launched in 2007, won't be the last spinoff.
"It always comes down to whether we'd have fun making it," Huh said. "If the answer is yes, then we're going to do it."
