The Force is about to be unleashed in three dimensions.

George Lucas' camp recently confirmed his plan to recast all six episodes of Star Wars -- the original trilogy and the prequels -- in an all-new, eye-popping 3-D light.

"He isn't going to put a product out, I think, that isn't anything other than first rate," DreamWorks Animations CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg told ComingSoon.net. Katzenberg also assured reporters that Lucas "has the technical resources" to pull it off.

Fair enough, but are fans ready for Jabba the Hutt's 600-year-old slobbery mug and Luke's lopped-off hand flying out at them?

Judging by the Star Wars forum response, fanboys and girls are divided. User Pyro935 on Counting Down's Star Wars General Forumposted an emphatic response to the news: "NOOOOOOOOO!!" while others, like user Cheebs on forum NeoGaf, wrote "3D these days is awesome, I approve."

Currently, there are two major feature films undergoing dimensional makeovers: George Romero's 1978 zombie classic Dawn of the Dead and Tim Burton's stop-motion tale* The Nightmare Before Christmas*, according to DigitalSpy.

The conversion process to transform a 2-D movie into 3-D can cost between $50,000 and $100,000 per minute.
