The FCC says it will start testing "white space" devices next Monday.
Google has called on the FCC to open up white space spectrum -- the unused spectrum that lies between analog television channels -- arguing that it could potentially be used for faster broadband access. The company has described it as "WiFi 2.0" or "WiFi on steroids."
The National Association of Broadcasters, meanwhile, has argued that use of the precious spectrum could interfere with existing television transmission.
The field tests will mainly be conducted in Maryland and Washington D.C., with a couple wireless microphone tests planned at undetermined sports and entertainment venues.
