"LOLCAT responds to CHEEZBURGER," the ad posted on the telephone pole said. "Please to call." So I did.
It turns out that the ad was placed by one Doctor Popular, a self-proclaimed "professional yo-yoer, cartoonist, musician, nerdcore rapper, tailor,
crafster, and clothing designer living in San Francisco’s MissionDistrict." You see, Doc Pop has a debut release out from his band Drown Radio called Me Geek Pretty One Day – hat tip to David Sedaris! – and he's as keen on hawking it over the phone as he is on his site.
Through Drown Radio, he has worked with left-field dudes like MC Lars, MC Chris, MC Frontalot and other artists with no "MC" in front of their names at all. For good measure, he's also created indie comics, bizarro podcasts and clothing made out of vaccum tubes and raw denim.
So...how's the music? Nerded to the Nth degree.
Call the number above and you'll get snippets of geek-hop tracks, including "LOLCATS," which as the Doc explains is "about laugh-out-loud cats taking over the earth," as well as "Gary Gygax," an homage rap to the Dungeons & Dragons inventor. It is "one of those perfect songs to play when you're rolling with your homies," Doc adds. That is, rolling dice, not rides.
As for the marketing maneuver, it's a good one. But it's just too bad you can't call collect.
