Blockbuster has put its purchase of Movielink to use. Well, extremely limited use. The company rolled out a beta movie downloading service -- for purchase or rental -- to roughly 500 customers.

The service, which will roll out to the general public in August, and will include 5,000 titles that can be downloaded. The purchase downloading prices start at $8; and rental fees start at $2.

It's good to see somebody doing something useful with Movielink -- the studio-backed service (funded by MGM, Paramount, Sony, Universal and Warner Bros.) reportedly sucked up close to $100 million in funding before Blockbuster swept in and bought it for a rumored $20 million
