Innovations in tech have encouraged merges in genre. Computer vs. Banjo has literalized that ongoing process in both its band name and forthcoming self-titled debut, due out June 17. The Nashville-based duo, a team-up between Gran Torino guitarist Johnny Mann and Blue Merle guitarist Beau Stapleton, celebrates the merge with an offering of digital folk music that echoes Don Cavalli as much as it does G. Love and Special Sauce.

Computer vs. Banjo has also literalized the band's name with an online Pong game playable on their official site, in which a computer and banjo battle for old-school gaming supremacy. The duo's debut offers a similar sort of competition, albeit with instruments: Everything from guitars, drum machines and banjos to dobros, synths and mandolins are thrown into the musical blender. The result is a series of tasty digifolk jams from a band who doesn't need a weatherman to tell it which way the zeitgeist is blowing.
