Along with the graphical overhaul coming to the towns of Pirates of the Burning Sea along with the 1.5 patch, Flying Lab Software is planning a significant marketing push that will finally make free trials of the game available to prospective pirates.

"What we’re focusing on now is making the game easy to get into and to expose it to a wide audience," wrote Flying Lab CEO Russell Williams in a recent community address.

"To that end, we’re starting free trials in July (towards the middle or latter part) which will let players try out the game for 14 days and see if it’s for them."

I think this is perfect timing on their part.

The storm of excitement over Age of Conan has begun to die down, World of Warcraft's next expansion is still months away, and many MMO gamers are looking for something new.

Who wants to spend $50 on an unproven commodity? No one.

So by offering a free trial you give players who maybe were intrigued with the idea of being a pirate a chance to try it out before investing a significant amount of cash.

I don't think it will instantly catapult Pirates of the Burning Sea to the top of the MMO population chart, but at least a lot of people will get a chance to see what the game is all about.
