Mario Kart Wii

gets some new downloadable content, the first for a Wii title.

Maybe.

The new content -- available only until June 9th -- takes the form of a battle arena, released in conjunction with the ongoing online tournaments for the game. The new Super Mario Galaxy-inspired arena is circular in design, and the challenge for players is to quickly knock down four Spikey Topmen.

But a few sites are suggesting that the content could already be on the Mario Kart Wii disc, making it not exactly DLC after all.

Sadly, don't count on facing friends, since the arena can only be accessed in tournament mode, and not in the standard multiplayer modes
-- although you may find comfort in the downloadable "ghost" time trials.

If this is a sign that more downloadable tracks are on the way, assuming it's the real deal, Nintendo better figure out a way to deal with storage issues fast.
