For decades now, comedian Mike Meyers has mixed and matched his television, film and music. From the cable-access rockfest Wayne's World to Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello serenades in the Austin Powers franchise and onward into his forthcoming goof The Love Guru, the Canadian culture vulture has made a living out of smashing sonics onto screens.
But taking a look at The Love Guru's official soundtrack is enough to make one go limp. Celine Dion's "I Drove All Night" may be an aphrodisiac in some antimatter netherverse, but here on Earth it is a recipe for celibacy. Similarly, Mike Meyers' guru revisions of Steve Miller's "The Joker," Extreme's "More Than Words" and Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" (wha?) are slightly funny, but mostly painful. And while the movie boasts a track from Hollywood composer George S. Clinton, it really could have used a track or two from the dirtier, funkier George Clinton. Now, that cat is what you call a love guru.
It's not all recombined Top 40 torture. Cornershop's cool "Brimful of Asha" shows up, albeit in remixed form via Norman Cook. And Outkast's Big Boi has a slice of sexual noise called "B.A.S.K.O." on board. But, dude...Celine Dion? What is there left to say?
The soundtrack is out now exclusively on iTunes, until June 17 when it goes into, ahem, wider release. Duck and cover.
