The Looftlighter looks and sounds like a tricked out hairdryer, but its lineage lies closer to electric heat guns designed to strip paint and thaw frozen pipes. With a press of the handle-mounted button, we were able to pump out a jet of 1,290-degree F air that easily ignited coals at the base of a charcoal pyramid within 60 seconds. Backing it off about six inches, the Looftlighter continued to heat the charcoal while providing additional oxygen to the fire. The result: Standard charcoal was ready to cook in just 10 minutes.
