Google -- along with CNBC, the Wall Street Journal and Xignite -- is finally rolling out real-time stock quotes, a week after Yahoo rolled out its own.

While delayed stock quotes have been available online for years, it's taken a long time for Google to get its hands on free, real-time quotes, which have typically only been available to high-end investors who pay thousands of dollars per month for a Bloomberg or Reuters terminal.

Up until last week, one of the few affordable ways the public could get real-time stock quotes online was by paying Yahoo between $10.95 and $13.95 per month for the service. Those premium services are still available from Yahoo, and include real-time data updates that the free service does not, such as market cap updates, trading volume data, 52-week trading ranges and so on.
