OK, so maybe the Bernz-o-Matic MAAP torch isn't actually made for lighting grills, but it works great. MAPP gas (petroleum gas mixed with methylacetylene-propadiene for all you chem geeks) burns hotter than propane — perfect for brazing copper pipe and not too shabby for firing up the grill. The centimeter-wide, 4-inch blue flame quickly ignited paper kindling in a chimney and blazed MatchLight charcoal in seconds. We also managed to ignite standard charcoal in under a minute, though the Bernz-o-Matic's concentrated heat doesn't quite work as efficiently as the Hammacher's hot air.
