Summer package tours are nothing new. Michigan's Rothbury Festival, however, has taken some Earth-conscious steps to stand out from the usual pack of natural resource hogs.
Taking place over the Fourth of July weekend at Double JJ Ranch, Rothbury is aiming to be the most environmentally sustainable music fest in the game. It already boasts the usual host of climate-friendly acts, including Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, Phil Lesh, Primus, Thievery Corporation, Modest Mouse and more. And sure, Snoop Dogg is on board, but everyone knows how much he loves the green. All kinds, evidently.
But that's just the music. The festival is also hosting an energy fair, and an environmental think tank curated by Stanford climatologist Dr. Stephen Schneider. It is also partnering with retailer Whole Foods and nonprofit arts activists Conscious Alliance to build a canned food sculpture that will make the Guinness Book of World Records.
Whole Foods plans to donate over 500,000 pounds of natural and organic grub to Conscious Alliance, who in turn will produce 40,000 cans of food for their self-described "Conscious CanSculpture," to be designed by architect John Brittingham, director of the Graduate Architecture Program at Montana State University. The food drive extends to the entire festival as well: Concertgoers who donate 10-20 non-perishable food items to Rothbury walk away with limited edition 2D and 3D posters, as well as the knowledge that they came not only to party, but to help.
