How young is too young to surf videos on YouTube?
Totlol, a new online video site, targets computer-savvy kiddies aged 6 months to 6 years. The site relies on YouTube's platform and sizable video database. To ensure clips are age-appropriate, Totlol uses a system of "community moderation."
Here's how it works: Parents skim YouTube for videos using a special Totlol tool, tagging candidates for addition to the Totlol library. Then, those videos are held in a screening pool, allowing Totlol members to vote on whether or not clips should be added to the site's collection.
Kids are web-savvier than ever, and spend a good portion of time online already. Why not build a secure destination where tots can safely navigate for short bursts of entertainment? It's likely to be better than commercial-saturated prime time viewing.
And as online video news site NewTeeVee points out, Totlol makes more sense than kid-based social networks: "Kids have a much bigger need for entertainment than they do for their own online presence."
What do you think? Would you tune your toddlers into Totlol for entertainment?
