We were impressed when we heard that Craig Newmark, the endearingly bumbling co-founder of Craiglist, said he planned to "wing" a commencement speech at the University of California Berkeley on Tuesday.
Granted, he had a topic in mind (the power of the internet), but his mission still sounded slightly suicidal to us. Certainly, we wouldn't have the courage to give a commencement speech, much less "wing" it.
But it turns out, Craig probably shouldn't have, either. The critics (well, two commenters) came back with their reviews, and the take away is that he should have prepared something. Anything, really.
"I wasn't aware such a caliber of monotony was possible," wrote Gordon. "I stopped paying attention somewhere in the middle and then for some reason my ears perked up when his speech became a political rally cry, but it was boring nonetheless."
And from Dave:
"Well he winged it alright. And no it wasn't a 15 minute speech. It was more like a 20 minute, incoherent ramble under a blistering hot sun.
Painful, inconsiderate, douchey. I can't believe he got paid to speak at the top public university in the country, and didn't think it was worth his while to prepare a speech."
