Space Nazis Attack in Sci-Fi Spoof Iron Sky

Collaborative filmmaking leaps to new heights with Finnish film Iron Sky, a Dr. Strangelove-esque dark comedy that imagines a future where Nazis descend from space to attack Earth.

The sci-fi film comes from the same team behind 2005’s fan-made indie parody Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning.

Star Wreck was created by a group of friends and funded by solicited donations. The Star Trek and Babylon 5 mashup movie was released for free online and eventually downloaded by 8 million people before getting picked up for DVD distribution by Universal.

"With Star Wreck, we learned how to gather large numbers of volunteers, to break tasks down and create a film in a distributed manner," said director Timo Vuorensola in a  a press release on the Iron Sky site. "For our second film, we decided to take all that knowledge and automate it. WreckAMovie.com is our collaborative filmmaking website. WreckAMovie is being used today to make Iron Sky as well as the Finnish horror film Sauna, and it is available for other films as well."

The Star Wreck DVD sales gave Iron Sky a boost, affording Vuorensola a much bigger budget, a veteran crew (including Oscar-nominated producers Tero Kaukomaa and Petri Jokiranta) and a script written by award-winning science fiction writer Johanna Sinisalo.

Vuorensola plans to shop the Iron Sky teaser trailer (above) at the Cannes Film Festival next week in hopes of landing an international distribution deal.
