We've heard that CNET gave the old heave ho to a handful of music writers at the beginning of the week, a few days before the company agreed to be acquired by CBS in a $1.8 billion deal.
There were four people from the MP3 content team who got pink slips on Monday, according to our source, and the suspicion in the department is that they could be replaced with writers from Maxim magazine or Blender magazine. (The new executive vice president of entertainment at CNET, Stephen Colvin, came from Dennis (publisher of Maxim) and the music sites editor-in-chief (whom we're assuming is Craig Marks) came from Blender.
"The editor in chief specifically said to one of the guys let go, 'I don't want to read about artists talking about their music,'" our source said.
We contacted CNET for a comment but haven't heard back.
