Economists already know about the renminbi, the Chinese currency that has appreciated by double digits while the dollar has nosedived. But some fans know Renminbi as a mostly instrumental digi-rock outfit from Brooklyn, whose full-length debut The Phoenix, out today, is an incendiary collection of spacey noise nuggets. The stock of both is rising.
Co-founder/guitarist and Chinese-American Lisa Liu’s trips to China inspired Renminbi’s name and graphic design, which is handled by co-founder, Korg-pounder and graphic designer SMV. But the sound of their noise has roots in everything from Polvo and Sonic Youth to From Monument to Masses and My Bloody Valentine. Check out the free download of "The Shore" for more, and make sure to cash in your dollars for Renminbi online or at your local indie shop. (This probably isn’t the band for Virgin Megastore vultures).
