For the Los Angeles Metro, the system can boost its annual revenue by $240,000 either by having 192,000 additional yearly riders, or by placing one advertisement inside the subway tunnel. The two year pilot program installed between Hollywood/Highland and Universal City stations (northbound trains) consists of 360 digital LED strips that light up when a train passes, forming an animated video.
The cost to install and maintain the animated advertisement are taken care of by Sidetrack Technologies. The Winnipeg-based company controls which ads are presented via internet, and can rotate ads depending on the time of day.
Advertisements within subway systems have provided fair amounts of revenue for transit agencies. Passengers are frequently trapped within a subway car with nothing else to look at (unless they brought a newspaper or book along). And since advertisements in this animated form are relatively new, people's attentions are caught. In Metro's proposed budget, the company seeks $23.6 million in additional advertisement profits from the entire bus and subway system.
Other subways throughout the world have used animated videos inside the subway tunnels. See other videos after the jump.
