Is there really a place in the MMO market for something other than World of Warcraft?

Erling Ellingsen, product manager for the upcoming Age of Conan massively multiplayer game, thinks so. "Age of Conan is really the first mature MMO title to hit the market, and I think that if it does really well, that's definitely going to open up that market for the competition," he told Gamesindustry.biz.

He explains that because most MMOs are rated for younger players, there's a huge opening for mature games to come in and grab a chunk out of the current MMO audience, who on average are in their mid-twenties.

Sure, but what about all those World of Warcraft players out there? "Perhaps they were 14 (when they started playing), but they're 18 now, and ready for something new. I think the market is maturing, and I think you'll see more mature MMOs," says Ellingsen.
