Of the 15,000 products rated by the ESRB, a scant 23 have earned the super-naughty AO rating, for reasons ranging from graphic sex, to graphic violence, to inappropriate use of vegetables.
What They Play did the hard work of sorting through all the smut to find out exactly what earned each game its spot in the adult-only pantheon.
Some of the best-known titles on the list are the PlayStation title Thrill Kill, which got the axe when Electronic Arts decided it didn't want to publish something so "senselessly violent," and the European release of Indigo Prophecy (aka Fahrenheit), which, unlike the American version, contained a bit of sex.
GTA: San Andreas' Hot Coffee mod landed it on the list, and it's no great surprise to see games like All Nude Cyber earning an AO rating, but you might wonder what gambling sim Peak Entertainment Casinos is doing there.
Apparently, Peak wanted to "lawmakers and parents that we share their concerns about underage gambling," which fits with the rating's guide that the game in question is intended only for players age 18 and up.
Feel free to bone up (groan) on the other titles. In the name of research and learning, of course.
