It didn’t take long for Pitchfork’s online video experiment to pay dividends, well at least in the metaphorical sense. One week after it went live, Pitchfork.tv broke one million video plays, and continued to remind us all why MTV exists at all.
The hilarious part? A writer on MTV.com wrote: "I am probably not supposed to say this, but Pfork’s brand newonline channel is pretty unbelievably great." Then again, that praise was appended to a piece that argued the recently reunited Stone Temple Pilots were one of the five best bands of the ’90s. Sweet hilarity, Batman!
Now for the bad news. The site is adding more music videos, but needs to diversify its portfolio to augment its original content with more music videos from the labels. Beach House, Tortoise and Madvillain are absolutely necessary, but only Beach House’s "You Came to Me" is a recent release. If Pitchfork is going dumpster-diving for killer videos from yesteryear, there are better nuggets to be had than one of the least interesting songs from Tortoise’s second-best release. What about The Minutemen’s "This Ain’t No Picnic" or Tom Waits’ "Blow Wind Blow"? How about My Bloody Valentine’s "Feed Me With Your Kiss", at right?
