We realize people have been teaching guitar in three dimensions since the instrument was invented, but this is different. IPerform3D films video guitar tutorials with motion capture technology to produce a virtual 3D model of the guitarist.

In order to study what the site's pros are teaching, budding guitarists can zoom in, loop any segment, view the lesson from multiple angles (including from behind the fretboard) and slow the song to a crawl while preserving its pitch. The idea behind the site is that by manipulating video of the guitar teacher teaching, you can learn at a faster rate.

I've been watching lots of online guitar tutorials lately for another story I'm working on, and these use a totally different approach that lacks the warmth of an actual human being, but makes up for that in versatility and realistic motion capture. If you're a visual learner who wants to play the guitar, iPerform3D's demo certainly warrants a closer look.

IPerform3D can be downloaded as a free trial (Windows only). The full version costs $20 per month.
