CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts -- The overcrowded side room packed with weary bodies at the Middle East pub came to life as soon as Leslie Hall took the stage Friday night. Known for her collection of gem sweaters and ferocious, funny rap songs, Hall gyrated and shimmied as she performed the songs that have turned her into a certified cewebrity.
Fans lined the small, worn stage pantomiming heart shapes, blowing kisses and whooping catcalls at the gold-pantsuit-clad songstress. Hall, along with the backup dancers Klassy K and BGB that form her band, Leslie and the Lys, performed several of her best-known songs, including "Real Gold and Glamorous" from her latest album Cewebrity, "Zombie Killer" and "Can't Stop the Gems." Wall projections of vintage footage of self-defense lessons, classic horror films and aerobics lessons supplemented each song.
In between whispering phrases like, "The internet is a special place where we can all be friends forever," and "I have a big ol' goblet of golden kisses," Hall gave shout-outs to various memes in the room and thanked ROFLCon organizer Tim Hwang multiple times before pulling him on-stage for a dedicated performance.
The evening's lineup, which closed out the first day of the ROFLCon internet meme conference here, included Average Homeboy Denny Blaze, faux arabian rock band Group X and geek band Lemon Demon.
Experimental local band Trocadero performed songs featured in the Rooster Teeth machinima series Red vs. Blue.
The crowd exuberantly cheers on Leslie and the Ly's during their Friday night performance at Cambridge late-night spot and music venue Middle East.**
