Interplay is celebrating its return to financial solvency by developing sequels to some of its most successful franchises, including Descent, MDK, Dark Alliance, and a particular favorite of the Game|Life East staff, Earthworm Jim.
At the moment, little more is known about the proposed sequels. Interplay recently re-launched its in-house game studio and is currently hiring developers, but may still outsource the development of its portfolio. So far, all we have is a placeholder web site with art from the games in question.
The sequels are half of Interplay's new strategy for success. An MMO based on the Fallout universe, for which Interplay is still seeking funding, would be the other half. Bethesda acquired the rights to Fallout in 2007, but licensed the MMO rights back to Interplay, provided Interplay began development within two years and secured $30 million in funding.
What I can't decide is if I want a 3D Earthworm Jim or not. His previous foray into the third dimension was a complete disaster, but putting Jim in a Ratchet & Clank-style world would be pretty damn sweet. Descent always made me seasick, but it's a perfect fit for the online abilities of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
