Mobile social network Brightkite is slowing gaining steam as a microblogging force to be reckoned with.

The SMS-based social networking tool rolls up the fun features of Twitter -- but uses location-based tags to cluster notifications. You can either scan through the Brightkite universe or filter for photos, microblog posts or updates by location.

"Say you're at a conference, or in a new city and you're bored. Why not try to meet up with someone new?," said Brightkite founder Martin May in a phone conversation. May said the service rolled out a couple hundred beta invites last week, and currently has more than a thousand people queued in a waiting list to sign up.

The geographical aspect of the service lends itself to techie gatherings and conferences like Web 2.0 Expo and ROFLCon, where users pounced on the application as a way to meet like-minded folks in the same area.

Brightkite is currently in hot demand -- but Wired.com has a limited number of invites available for our readers. Leave your e-mail in the comments below or send me a message, and we'll get your invite out (at least till the well runs dry).
