A case of bad timing has prompted The British Academy of Film and Television Arts to cancel its annual videogame awards this year, reports MCV.

The event was apparently scheduled too close to the Christmas release period, and as a result, many developers would likely have been too busy to provide code to the judges. No code, no nomination.

Rather than wind up with a group of nominees that didn't truly represent the year's best in gaming, BAFTA decided the wise choice would be to simply cancel this year's awards, and try to schedule the 2009 awards at a more developer-friendly time of year.

Not all videogame awards are created equal -- some genuinely reflect excellence in the industry, while others are little more than blatant marketing efforts. It's nice to see that one organization, at least, is making an effort to get it right.
