Rimoffices Fortune.com reports that Research In Motion and AT&T's latest incarnation of the Blackberry, originally expected for release in June, may be facing delays due to an unspecified "tech glitch". It's only a coincidence that this mysterious glitch has cropped up now, right?

Sources close to RIM and AT&T have reportedly stated the delay is occurring to avoid the companies' having to throw down with Apple's latest offering to the gods of sleek gadgetry, expected to be released in June as well. A RIM spokeswoman abstained from commentary on the "rumors and speculation".

The delay of the phone may be viewed as a lack of courage in the face of adversity on the parts of RIM and AT&T, but the possibility of being swallowed by a tidal wave of iPhone hype is a very real one. This could very well work to the advantage of RIM and AT&T -- so long as they can provide a host of competitive features. Only time, and subsequent sales reports, will tell.
