Radical Entertainment has decided to cut the multiplayer mode from Prototype so that the company can focus its resources on making the game "a ground-breaking, single player open-world/action title."
Radical's Tim Bennison told Team Xbox that although Prototype multiplayer is "a great concept and gameplay bonus, our conclusion is that we won't be able to pull it off with the same level of quality and polish that we're aiming for with the original single player story."
Radical is hoping that Prototype is well-received enough by the gaming public to become a franchise, said Bennison, so shoving in a half-baked multiplayer mode, or delaying the game's release until the multiplayer was more polished seemed particularly unwise.
That's not to say that multiplayer might not find its way into the game via downloadable content sometime later, however. "Post launch downloadable content is something we're currently evaluating for Prototype from many different angles, including multiplayer content such as co-op," said Bennison.
