Pownce is often compared to Twitter, but Pownce has one thing that sets it apart — the service makes it very easy to share files with your friends. But accessing those files requires a trip to the site, or installing the Pownce AIR application, which is why PownceFS was created.

PownceFS allows you to interact with your friends' shared files as though they were on your hard drive.

The application displays a folder for each of your friends and inside you' find all the files they've uploaded to Pownce. Files are cached locally so you can access them without excessive delays.

As Richard Crowley, creator of PownceFS, writes on his blog, “PownceFS is a Fuse filesystem that mounts your friends' files from Pownce as a local filesystem.”

We've covered a couple of other Fuse-based virtual file systems before, including WikipediaFS, FlickrFS and GrabFS.

For the geeks out there, PownceFS was written in Python and uses Pownce's OAuth support to do the necessary authentication. It's definitely one of the coolest uses of an API that we've seen in a long time.

If you're a heavy Pownce user, grab a copy of PounceFS from Crowley's blog, which also has installation instructions for all major platforms.
