Only months ago, Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking told "Automotive News Europe" that because of the additional costs and relatively low sales volume of Porsche vehicles, he didn’t think diesels made sense for the company. But a German industry newsletter, "AID" reports that Porsche will deliver a diesel--most probably in its top-drawer Cayenne--by the middle of next year.
Porsche officials would not comment on the story. If it's true, Porsche will probably source the engine from Volkswagen. Porsche currently owns 31 percent of VW, and plans to raise that to a majority stake, even though company officials insist there are no plans to merge the two companies.
