Believe it or not, that annoying looping reel of inanity jabbering away on a TV in your local GameStop -- wittily referred to as GameStop TV -- actually helps sell games.
A study by Nielsen Media Research says that games featured on GameStop TV show a sales boost of anywhere from 19 to 36 percent. Products mentioned, but not specifically advertised, also saw a sales boost of about 20 percent.
GameStop TV is a two-hour looping reel of gaming info such as interviews, previews, and commercials, that runs in most GameStop locations that's changed once a month. (A moment of silence for the poor GameStop employees who have to put up with it, if you please.)
What makes GameStop TV so annoying -- and, no doubt, as effective as it is -- is its full-tilt "This is awesome!"
approach to everything it discusses. A game featured on the video isn't just fun, it's a mind-blowing, life-changing experience, and this controller here won't just make you better at your game, it'll make you a better person.
Then again, maybe it works because it's chock full of subliminal messages.
