There was a time in bubble-pop when girls used to just want to have fun. In today's hybrid age of bubble-hop, they just want to get Googled.
Case in point: Teyana Taylor, who has parleyed assists from blinged-out hip-hop crossovers like Beyonce, Jay-Z and Pharrell into a paean to the cultural capital of Sergey and Larry's search powerhouse. Her single "Google Me" is a throwback to the days of the aforementioned Cyndi Lauper, when warm and fuzzy videos full of bright colors and dance moves made up for serious chops. Taylor said as much about her debut effort, From a Planet Called Harlem: "It's a story about having fun."
That may be, but these times are more hard-hitting. Even Jay-Z, Beyonce and Pharrell feel anachronistic in an age that could probably use a new-millennium version of Public Enemy more than it can this upgraded version of Monie Love.
Either way, Google is living large in the 21st century, despite its stock price hovering at around $30 off its 52-week low this morning. Should Taylor pick another Silicon Valley stalwart for her next release? Call your broker.
