For many of us, lacking sufficient space for high kicks and power slides was enough of a deterrent to keep us from throwing down the cash for Rock Band, banishing many a dream of nonstop living room rock stardom to the occasional house party.
Enter iBand, a trio of tabletop instamusicians who’ve taken the plunge to jail-break their handsets for your listening pleasure.
"There has to be an iPhone band!" said Sebastian Wöber, who submitted a clip of iBand in action to gadget blog Gizmodo. "It’s the next step."
Akin to "chiptune" artists who tweak vintage computer hardware to create lo-fi musical compositions, the iBand team uses a Nintendo DS and two modded iPhones to create their home-brewed sound.
In this clip, iBand member Marina Dell’mour plays the iAnoan iPhone application that transforms the device into a touchscreen piano, while Roland Dell’mour strums the PocketGuitar, a different iPhone app that turns the device into a touchscreen guitar. Wöber supplements the sound using a Nintendo DS to play the interactive music game Electroplankton.
Wöber said fans can expect another iBand hit in just a few weeks — this time, using only hacked iPhones: "We’ll … gather (more iPhones) and add a drum set with the BeatPhone app and a guitar and lose the DS."
Till then, we’re keeping our eyes glued to YouTube for spinoffs — anyone else excited for a supernerdy battle of the iBands? Or have a clip of your own? Feel free to send it in!
