Tesla Guitarist Gives Distortion a Whole New Meaning

Aspiring metal heads looking for some wow-inducing theatrics can take a cue from Glasgow-based musician, Steve Conner (who goes by the name Scopeboy). He plugs his guitar into a Tesla coil! The result: ear-bleedingly awesome distortion. Hear him shred and watch the electrical sparks fly in the video at right. As you can imagine, it obviously doesn’t sound pretty, as Conner explains in his blog:

“Yes, it sounds pretty harsh and horrible, no matter what pedals I try. It also needs a different playing style than you would use with an ordinary amp, and even then it sounds awful! Any chords more complex than octaves or fifths just sound like noise.”

Of course, it’s not about making pretty music, anyway. While the video’s picked up a lot of attention for Conner, he’s still waiting to hear back from Trent Reznor and Muse.
