It might also have a future as urban sound art, but a device aimed at deterring teens from anti-social behavior could be banned for "demonising" children. As *Wired *reported on launch, the Mosquito utilises sound frequencies which decline as we age (under 25? try it here). British company, Compound Security Systems, which developed the device, has sold around 5000 worldwide. (It has even inspired a ring tone which reveals your personal Mosquito frequency.)
But while law enforcers and retailers are impressed with results from the $1000 device, a new campaignclaims the Mosquito infringes teens' rights. British civil liberties group, Liberty, asks: 'What type of society uses a low-level sonic weapon on its children?" Defending the device, CSS claims the "buzz" is not a pain, but an effective irritant.
