While discussing Wii Fit with Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, Shigeru Miyamoto commented that he doesn't think the game's purpose is to get you in shape, but rather to make you aware of your body. Wii Body Awareness presumably wasn't as catchy a title, though.

"I don't think Wii Fit's purpose is to make you fit; what it's actually aiming to do is make you aware of your body...If you're standing still, and it tells you 'Your body is swaying', you can see on the training results screen that your body has been shaking," Miyamoto said.

"I think becoming aware of things like this about yourself is quite interesting," he added.

Interesting, perhaps, but probably not what's ultimately going to sell Wii Fit to the legions of consumers who hope it will whip them into shape.

During the interview, which is the latest in an ongoing series of interviews on Wii.com about Wii Fit, Miyamoto also explained that not only will you be able to weigh yourself with the Balance Board, but you'll also information like "weighed on day x" next to your Mii on the Wii Channel.

Miyamoto hopes this will inspire families to check up on each other, to make sure you're keeping up with your health regimen. "It could inspire situations like your daughter telling you 'Dad, you didn't weigh yourself today, did you?!'" Oh, yeah, that's just what I want: inquiries from my family about whether or not I've weighed myself recently.

More appealing is the ability to play one of Wii Fit's games while watching normal TV, by using audio cues from the Wii Remote. You can apparently play both a jogging and step game this way. Miyamoto might not think getting in shape is the purpose of playing Wii Fit's, but it sounds like it could certainly be a pleasant side effect.
