Not quite ready to throw in the Hummer towel despite ever-softening sales, General Motors is set to roll out the surprisingly attractive and useful H3T and H3T Alpha crew-cab pickups, vehicles that recall the gone-but-not-forgotten Jeep Scrambler and Comanche.

The base H3T features GM's less-than-lovable 3.7-liter in-line five, producing 242 horsepower and 242 pound-feet of torque, while the Alpha model (pictured here) uses the far more pleasant 5.3-liter aluminum-block V-8, good for 300 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque.

At the risk of singing the same old diesel song, we'd like to suggest to the General that now might be a nice time to consider offering to American consumers the diesel engine you're promising for the South African-built, foreign-market H3, particularly considering off-road rival Jeep has reintroduced such an engine to its U.S. range. At any rate, the news here isn't what's under the hood, but rather what's out back. The H3T's five-foot pickup bed won't have anybody trading in their Silverado, but it does feature GM's handy bed-rail accessory system and a removable tailgate. Off-road readiness is a given, with available 33-inch knobby tires, skid-plates galore, four-wheel drive with locking front and rear differentials, and a low-range transfer case with 4.03:1 gearing for rock-crawling. The beefy Alpha will tow 5,900 pounds, too.
