Guild Wars, the first major MMO to adopt a business model not based on monthly subscription fees, has topped five million total units sold in North America, Europe and Asia.
This milestone comes almost three years after the title's original launch, and during a period in which developer ArenaNet is working to create a sequel to the series, cleverly titled Guild Wars 2.
Many will see this as a victory for alternate MMO business models, and whether you prefer that terminology or simply pointing out that "people like free games," you have to agree that ArenaNet and NCsoft have shown that World of Warcraft isn't then only word in fantasy-based online gaming.
